John Knight and Will Watson from Scientific Update will give brief presentations on the following topics and invite discussion from the audience.

 

1.  Scale-up - What Goes wrong?

  • Outlines some of the typical failings in processes as they are scaled up
  • Comment on the types of failure modes as well as comment on some aspects of safety and issues arising during technology transfer
  • Discusses what makes a good process (e.g. choice of solvent and work-up)
  • The content should be of interest to anymore involved in transferring processes from lab to plant and between plants

2.  Green Chemistry

Commercial organisations in the chemicals industry are increasingly placing sustainability and environmental declarations in their mission statements and annual reports. This roundtable session will discuss the green chemistry technology and tools available to facilitate the achievement of environmental and sustainability goals. With an emphasis on measurement and metrics, green chemistry concepts and principles will be discussed and exemplified with real-life case studies.

3. Outsourcing - What Goes Wrong?

John Knight from Scientific Update LLP will talk about his experiences based on 14 years' working within a chemical development CRO, highlighting where projects have gone wrong, development of strategies he used to guard against recurrence of problems and suggestions on how to manage client expectations.
